What are our classes like?

First, don’t worry about what to wear to class...whatever you find comfortable. After you’ve sampled a session or two, if you’re enjoying yourself and want to continue you may want to buy dance shoes – our members often wear ‘jazz’ shoes or ballroom dance shoes which are flexible and don’t fall off when things get lively!
Our classes are co-operative. That means there’s no one ‘teacher.’ Instead, the more experienced dancers take it in turns to introduce and "call" the dances that we’re learning. Steps and sequences are clearly explained and demonstrated but we remember that Jane Austen and her contemporaries did this to enjoy themselves. Usually, we walk through each dance step-by-step first, We have the same goal - to have fun and enjoy ourselves whilst learning and dancing the sets, cotillions and quadrilles of this fascinating period.

Who can join?

Anyone, really. Our members come in all ages, shapes and sizes, and you don’t have to be part of a couple, either...please feel free to come on your own.

Children over the age of 12 are welcome if accompanied by an adult, or by prior arrangement.

Regency dance is excellent exercise, and often more vigorous than you might think! For that reason, if you have any health conditions that might be affected by mild-to-moderate aerobic activity you may want to have a word with your GP just as a ‘common sense’ precaution.

How much does it cost?

We ask that our members contribute £5 per person for each class. This is to cover the cost of the rehearsal room rental and obtaining music. The funds also go towards providing insurance for all our members. There’s no annual membership fee.

The price of tickets for balls varies widely, depending upon the type of event, the venue and the hosting group. For our own events we try to keep costs down so that as many people as possible can take part.
